To turn a blind eye

“Would you turn a blind eye if you saw a robbery happening?” I saw this question the other day and I realised what a great expression it is. So, here we are today, looking at the expression “to turn a blind eye (to something)”.

Look at the examples below and try to figure out what it means:

  • I chose to turn a blind eye to some of his mistakes and let him speak.
  • Some people turn a blind eye to the obvious poverty in the city. For them, it’s better not to think about it.
  • The management will not turn a blind eye to bullying. They want to have a safe environment for everyone.
  • The landlord chose to turn a blind eye to the mess in the flat.

Have you figured out the meaning of this expression?

We use “to turn a blind eye” to refer to pretending not to see or to willingly ignore something.
